Introducing 19th Century Gaming

Educational - Fun - Intriguing

Mr. Lewis will demonstrate three different games of chance that were popular with Civil War soldiers.

While passing the time between drilling and battles, leisure time was filled

with opportunities to lose their money by playing ---

---  FARO  ---

---  CHUCK-A-LUCK  ---

---  SPANISH MONTE  ---

Faro - "Pharaon" or "Bucking the Tiger",  dates back to the late 17th century in France. It became the most widespread and favored game of chance in America during the 19th century.  It was played in every gaming hall in the old west from 1825 to 1915.  A simple card game, it was easy enough for even the most uneducated player and was based solely on pure luck of the cards.

The game of Faro went out of favor with gaming houses when it was taken over by poker, a game where more players could lose their money quicker.

Chuck-A-Luck - "Bird Cage", from unknown origin, is a game of chance played with three dice. Soldiers found it easy to set up as they oftentimes would draw the board onto their gum blankets.  Anything would be used for chips and dice were easy to carry.

Spanish Monte - was brought to the United States by the returning troops from the War with Mexico in 1848.  Another easy card game that was popular through the 1800s, particularly in the west, including Native American tribes.  Four cards were placed face down and bets were made as to which suit would turn up first.

Miss Ellie's Gaming Emporium  is well suited for all ages.  All bets are made with 19th century style chips that have NO MONETARY VALUE.

If a patron is lucky enough to walk away with any winnings, they will be "paid" in reproduction Confederate script that has NO MONETARY VALUE.
